The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco is the De Young and Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
As Art Director at ALTR, I worked with Creative Director Kim West on art and design direction for FAMSF. The goal was to increase diversity of museum membership, and build out the Patrons Circle design system to increase revenue from high volume donors. My strategy hinged on how art institutions occupy a virtual “3rd place” for millennials and digital native generations. My art direction followed these cues centering people as subjects with art as context, and playing with the juxtaposition of ancient and modern architecture at work in the museums.
Maximizing the brand typography, Akzidenz Grotesk, I used stroked type to formally emphasize messaging, and to play ironically with the graphic language of art and institutional legacy. Building out a more dynamic and relatable membership program aligned our art with our strategy, focusing on members as the protagonist, with resulting tagline “Membership Means More.”
ALTR studio worked alongside an internal rebrand, and we used the brand diagonal as a central element in our membership kit, and Patron’s Circle design system. In the Patron’s Circle, the brand diagonal was used as a die cut cover, playing with the layers of messaging, and using strong typography to create a refined and timeless set of printed materials.
