4. Strange Lands

Brand DesignMessagingPackaging

Strange Lands is a cannabis company with dedication to its target customers: artists and musicians.

Grown in small batches in Oakland, California, the founder wanted Strange Lands to stand out in the crowded landscape of minimalist, earthy and tech-like cannabis brands. I worked to establish a creative identity that would make weed psychedelic again.

Exploring music and cultural references from the dissident fringe of the ‘70s through contemporary stoner metal, I arrived at a visual identity rooted in the psychedelia. Leading with a custom Kabel wordmark, and leveraging an graphic language of lava lamps, microbes and glow-in-the-dark posters, Strange Lands is a brand that doesn’t shy away from the cultural history of Marijuana as a mind-altering drug.

The tagline and message “Let’s explore the universe together” elaborates that visual language, and invokes an ironic, maybe romantic, maybe totally platonic, but ultimately very relatable image of being handed a joint. Likewise the messaging “lets get strange” builds on the brand character and name, invoking the surreal potential of Strange Lands. The results of this strong brand identity were featured in Communication Arts.
