2. Jewish Currents
Art Direction Brand Design
EditorialJewish Currents is a quarterly magazine, and media outlet across platforms—including print, web, social, and podcast.
Founded in 1946, and rebranded in 2018, Jewish Currents is a brand with a strong legacy, and a potent present. Unlike most of its competitors, the brand is positioned at an intersection of both culture and intelligentsia, and is as strong in its editorial voice as it is in reporting.
I came on as Art Director to redesign the magazine and refresh the brand. I worked with the major stakeholders to establish Jewish Currents position in their ecosystem, creative strategy, and brand DNA. After establishing brand pillars and art direction cues, I worked on the editorial redesign, first for the quarterly magazine, then design direction for web redesign, and social.
As Art Director at Jewish Currents, I've worked to fundamentally refine the brand and maximize art, playing with the tension between culture and intelligentsia throughout my design direction. I established new primary type systems, and elevated the brand's use of typography. My design decisions lead to 70% increase in subscription rates from 2020-2024. My covers have been featured in the New York Times, and my redesign of social in Jan 2023 led to 300% increase in social engagement.
