A severe design  
system for a DIY legend’s solo project

Erica Dawn Lyle is a prolific writer, curator, experimental musician, and cultural instigator. The former touring guitar player for Bikini Kill, Lyle has released her own musical collaborations with Kim Gordon, The Raincoats, Bernadette Mayer, Kathleen Hanna, and Brontez Purcell.

On Fire is an experimental cover of David Lee Roth’s original for Van Halen. I collaborated with Erica Dawn Lyle to evolve her visual identity beyond her signature hand-drawn script, channeling the song’s intensity through a concept linking wildfires on both coasts. The artwork uses a stark, ashen visual language—grainy, turbulent imagery paired with a type system led by Justin Sloane’s Simula typeface. The color palette contrasts muddy warm tones with bold PMS Real Purple, accented by icy blues on the back cover.
