MAC Cosmetics is a global cosmetics brand that drives makeup trends, and is culturally rooted in fashion.
As a designer on the special projects team, I was project lead on the rebrand of Make Up Mastery, an instore program to train aspiring makeup artists in MAC’s core looks. My design direction was driven by art as texture and color palette, and use of MAC’s bold typography and formal geometry. My lockup used the geometry of MAC’s wordmark, aligning to the cap-height of an emphasized “Mastery,” to create an almost-square form. Likewise, the art functioned as texture, applied in modular repeating forms that continued across the kit of materials, retail signage, social, and environmental.
The result was a strong retail expression of the brand, that gave MAC trainers effective tools, and converted aspiring makeup artists into MAC’s customer base.
